Metrics and terminologies of digital analytics

These all metrics are revolving around visits and hits which we are getting on websites. Single page visits, Bounce, Cart Additions, Bounce Rate, Exit rate,

We have heard the term “events” a lot of times if we are related to the field of web analytics in one way or another. This is the most basic term in web analytics.

What does an event mean?

For a social media site, when people are commenting on a picture, this event can be called as “comment”,

When people hit the play button to start a song on a music streaming site, this is a “play” event.

For an online food ordering site increasing the quantity of food items “+” or “-”, this event is can be called as “order quantity”

The maths related to events can give us an understanding of KPI, and KPI in turn tells us how our website or app is performing, what the behaviour of users on our site is, what the most liked part of our website is, and so on.

We can study it with examples like,

A social media site daily gets 5000-5500 “likes”.

An online food ordering site has 1000–1100 unique users who generally increase the quantity of food items they buy.

Single Page Visit:

When the entry page and exit page are the same, this visit is called a single page visit.

Sessions

A “session” is a set of activities done by a user on a website within a particular time limit.

Average Session Duration

This is the average amount of time a user spends in a single session on a website.

Bounce

When a user visits only one page and then leaves the website, it is called a “bounce.”

Cart Additions

When a user adds a product/service in cart, this hit count as a ‘Cart Addition’

For a given situation, we will understand the bounce rate and exit rate.

Bounce Rate

The bounce rate for Page A is equal to 1/4, or 25%, because no further action is taken after landing on Page A in 1 out of 4 visits.

Exit rate

Below is the case where three users visited a website and left the site.

The exit rate of page a=1/4 =25%, as out of four visits, only one visitor left from page A.

Exit rate of page B = 2/4 = 50%, as out of four visits, two visitors left from page B.

Exit rate of page C = 1/4 =25%, as out of four visits, once only visitor or visitors left from page C.

Click-Through Rate

CTR is simply how many times your ad gets clicked after being seen.

CTR = (Clicks / Impressions) * 100
